Traffic Information Detection and Dissemination System
Detection and surveillance systems provide support for freeway traffic management functions such as incident detection, ramp and freeway-to-freeway metering, traveler information, and congestion mitigation. The requirements for these functions, in terms of the types and accuracies of data and information and the spatial and temporal resolution of the data needed from sensors, depend on the specific application and the manner in which the application is implemented. For example, a particular automatic incident detection algorithm may require lane occupancy and traffic volume data at successive detection stations, while another may need lane occupancy, volume, and vehicle speed data at only one detection station, and whereas traveler information may require only average speed / travel time information collected at greater intervals along the roadway.

While inductive loop detectors are used extensively on freeways, other sensors such as magnetometers, video image processors, microwave radars, passive and active infrared sensors, and acoustic sensors are finding their way into freeway traffic management applications that require vehicle detection. These sensors can provide data not available from inductive loop detectors. Additional surveillance requirements may require other technologies, including video, road surface and weather information, and infrastructure security.

Traffic Information Dissemination System delivers data directly to travelers, empowering them to make better choices about alternate routes or modes of transportation. When archived, this historical data provides transportation planners with accurate travel pattern information, optimizing the transportation planning process. Recent advances in the SMS technology and portable electronic devices, sometimes called personal travel assistants (PTA), allows personalized traffic data to reach travelers on demand.

VALTRANS SYSTEMS’ staff has produced an Internet based system for reporting traffic information to the public. The system displays speed, VMS messages, and incident information on a GPS Layer Map for the area of Orange County and San Bernardino County in California. The system is capable of getting traffic data from various sources and agencies and then integrates these information into an easy to understand map.
